New Jersey saw a statistically significant increase in drug overdose deaths from 2016 to 2017, with a rate of 29.3 deaths per 100,000 people. There were 3,118 suspected drug-related overdose deaths in New Jersey in 2018, in addition to 16,082 naloxone administrations by law enforcement and emergency medical services that same year. New Jersey instituted an ODMAP pilot program in October 2018, and all New Jersey counties were using ODMAP by the end of the project. The New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety (DL&PS), Office of the Attorney General, used ODMAP data to deploy interventions targeting specific geographic areas or high-risk individuals through public safety, public health, and behavioral health partnerships. In addition, DL&PS used ODMAP data to assist in the identification of communities that were being disproportionately affected by the opioid crisis for the purpose of implementing Opioid Response Teams (ORTs) in the most in-need and at-risk municipalities in the state of New Jersey.
